Normally if you were going as far as South Africa, you’d need to spend two weeks there to experience the country properly but with a little time off work and a spontaneous decision - I got on a flight for three nights around Johannesburg and loved every minute. 

My trip didn’t really have a plan so we just explored what we could and made sure we barely slept to make the most of our trip so that every second was filled with some kind of adventure. We managed to get so much done that I thought I’d share a little post about how to experience South Africa in four days.. 

Flights
From London most flights are overnight which is the easiest way to go as its 11 hours from Heathrow. Rather than wasting a day travelling, you can have a full day either side of the flight in both directions. I flew out on Saturday evening at 7pm and landed at 7am on Sunday, then flew back with the same times on Wednesday-Thursday. This meant the only lost time was spent sleeping and as its a direct flight, there is no faffing around with changes.

Places To See
If you’re heading into Johannesburg then theres a few gems close by. My favourite place from this trip was Sun City, a gorgeous resort to check out with tons of things to do like water parks and casinos with Pilanesberg Game Reserve close by if you fancy spotting some animals. This was my must-see because of the complete reality change from England - you’d never see a giraffe stroll in front of your car over here! 

If you’re up for a little thrill, there is also the Orlando Towers to bungee jump from but its a bit of a drive so we didn’t get the chance to explore, but they are probably worth heading to anyway because they’re heavily painted and quite cool. Another spot to see is the Montecasino which is a shopping mall with a theatre, casino and pretty much anything you could want for some entertainment. The inside looks a lot like the streets of Monte Carlo with day-to-night sky painted on the ceiling so you feel like you’re in another country in the middle of summer.

Where To Stay
We spent most of the weekend staying at The Cabanas hotel in Sun City which was a little modern gem with the comfiest beds. Admittedly, we spent next to no time in the room because of our adventures but it was lovely. South Africa is fairly inexpensive so finding accommodation isn’t an issue and something fairly modern and up to date won’t cost you a fortune. I’d recommend trying airbnb as I found some great places for under £40 a night.


I’d really recommend checking out South Africa whether you have a couple of weeks or five minutes. I really want to have a road trip around the country next year and experience even more locations and push myself from my comfort zone.
